Health And Safety Policy
Pimlico Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy
Pimlico Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our cleaning activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our responsibilities, arrangements, and working practices to prevent accidents, injuries and damage to property during carpet, upholstery and related cleaning services.
Our aim is to conduct all work in a way that safeguards people, premises and the environment while maintaining high standards of quality and professionalism. This policy applies to all employees, contractors and temporary workers engaged by Pimlico Carpet Cleaning.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will provide suitable resources, equipment and training to implement this policy. Management will regularly review safe systems of work, update procedures and ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring day-to-day compliance with safe working procedures, communicating hazards, and ensuring that staff use equipment and cleaning agents correctly. They must report incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions to management.
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow training and instructions, use personal protective equipment provided, and immediately report any hazards, defects, spills or accidents.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Pimlico Carpet Cleaning will identify and assess the risks associated with carpet and upholstery cleaning, stain treatments, spot cleaning, and the use of machinery and chemicals. Site-specific risk assessments will be carried out where required, taking into account the condition of the property, access routes, ventilation, trip hazards, electrical points and any vulnerable occupants.
Findings from risk assessments will be used to develop and maintain safe systems of work. Staff are required to follow these procedures at all times, including the correct setup and use of hoses, wands, extraction machines, portable equipment and other tools associated with carpet cleaning.
We will review risk assessments periodically and whenever there are significant changes in our working methods, equipment, products or service areas.
Use of Cleaning Chemicals and Equipment
Cleaning products and stain removal solutions used by Pimlico Carpet Cleaning will be sourced from reputable suppliers and used strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and safety data sheets. Hazardous substances will be stored, handled and diluted carefully to prevent exposure, burns, respiratory issues or damage to surfaces.
Employees will receive training on the safe use of cleaning chemicals, including correct labelling, dilution ratios, ventilation requirements, avoidance of mixing incompatible substances and measures to take in case of spills or accidental contact.
All equipment, including carpet cleaning machines, vacuums and accessories, will be maintained in safe working order. Visual checks will be carried out before use and any damaged or defective equipment will be taken out of service until repaired or replaced.
Electrical and Trip Safety
As carpet cleaning often involves the use of electrical machinery and long hoses or power cables, particular care will be taken to minimise electrical and trip hazards. Staff will ensure that power leads and hoses are routed safely, avoiding sharp edges, hot surfaces and doorways where possible.
Extension leads will be used in accordance with safety guidance and will not be overloaded. Staff will avoid running cables through standing water or wet areas. Portable appliance testing or equivalent checks will be arranged as appropriate to confirm that equipment remains safe and fit for use.
Where work takes place in busy or shared areas, cleaning staff will use appropriate warning signs and, if necessary, barriers to alert occupants and visitors to wet floors, hoses and equipment.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Pimlico Carpet Cleaning recognises the risks associated with lifting, carrying and moving equipment and furniture. Staff will receive training in safe manual handling techniques, including team lifting where necessary, to reduce the risk of strains and musculoskeletal injuries.
Whenever possible, equipment with wheels or handles will be used to move heavy loads. Staff are instructed not to attempt to move items that are too heavy or awkward without assistance, and to request help or use alternative methods instead.
Protection of Clients, Occupants and the Public
During all cleaning activities, the safety and comfort of clients, occupants and visitors is a priority. We will take steps to minimise disruption, exposure to noise, fumes or moisture, and any risk of slips or trips resulting from our work.
Warning signs will be used to identify work areas and wet surfaces. Children, pets and vulnerable individuals will be kept away from active work zones, cleaning chemicals and machinery. Where necessary, we will discuss specific access or safety concerns with the client before work begins.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new employees will receive an induction that covers the key elements of this Health and Safety Policy, emergency procedures and safe use of cleaning products and equipment. Ongoing training will be provided as methods, equipment or legal requirements change.
Supervision appropriate to the level of experience and risk will be provided, especially for new staff or when specialist tasks are carried out. Health and safety information will be communicated clearly, and staff are encouraged to raise any questions or concerns about safe working methods.
Accidents, Incidents and First Aid
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. Details will be recorded and investigated so that underlying causes can be identified and measures put in place to prevent recurrence.
Pimlico Carpet Cleaning will ensure that suitable first aid arrangements are in place for staff working on client premises, including access to basic first aid supplies and emergency contact procedures. Employees will be informed of the steps to take in the event of an emergency, such as serious injury, fire or gas leak.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed at regular intervals and whenever there are significant changes in legislation, working practices, equipment or materials. Feedback from staff, clients and other stakeholders will be considered when assessing the effectiveness of our arrangements.
Pimlico Carpet Cleaning is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance. By working together, following established procedures and maintaining a culture of awareness and responsibility, we aim to ensure that all carpet and upholstery cleaning services are carried out safely and responsibly across our service areas.
